Do you begin with your needs, your worries, your to-do list or do you start by thanking God?
Terry Young begins our new series on the Lord’s Prayer by focusing on the opening line Jesus teaches us in Matthew’s Gospel: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”
We often imagine the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus preaching to crowds, but Matthew shows us something more personal. Jesus sat down with His disciples on a mountainside and spoke directly to them. It was a quiet, honest conversation about everyday life, how to live well, how to forgive, how to deal with anxiety and money. And in the middle of it, Jesus teaches them how to pray.
This short line says so much. Jesus invites us to approach God as Father – close, caring, and personal. But He also reminds us that God is holy, set apart, and worthy of awe.
So, let’s begin our prayers not with requests, but with adoration.
He’s worthy. He’s near. He’s holy.
