We are thrilled to be welcoming The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham Cathedral, to speak to us this Sunday, 31 May 2026.
So who is Philip?
Philip and his family returned to Durham in 2017 after 16 years in parish ministry in the south of England, where he had originally trained for ministry years earlier.
After attending a local comprehensive school in Sussex, Philip studied German and Russian at Cambridge University before going on to study Theology at Durham University while training for ministry at Cranmer Hall.
Philip served in churches within the Dioceses of Winchester and Guildford, where he led growing congregations, developed leadership training and helped plant new churches. Alongside parish ministry, he has also led pilgrimages to the Holy Land for both parish and student groups.
Philip became Principal of Cranmer Hall, the theological college within St John’s College at Durham University, where he taught New Testament and Christian Leadership and hosted the popular Talking Theology podcast. Alongside this, he also served on the General Synod.
Since 2023, Philip has served as Dean of Durham, overseeing the life and mission of Durham Cathedral. As Dean, Philip leads worship and preaching, helps shape and communicate the Cathedral’s vision, and chairs the Chapter, its governing body. He also serves in a range of governance roles across the city and Diocese.
Durham Cathedral has been a place of worship and mission since 995, with the present building dating back to 1093. The Cathedral’s mission statement is: “Inspired by its saints, Cuthbert and Bede, the mission of Durham Cathedral is to offer everyone the opportunity to encounter God and know God’s love in Jesus Christ.”
Philip has written two books, including Giving Thanks: Rediscovering the Heart of Gratitude, which was published earlier this year. Copies of the book will be available to purchase after both meetings this Sunday.
Philip is married to Annabelle, who works in palliative medicine, and they have two sons currently at university.
We look forward to welcoming Philip this Sunday and are excited to hear what God has given him to bring to us.
