a group of people praying

Welcome to our second prayer and fasting focus. Today perhaps we could direct our prayers towards our nation.

It’s easy to feel dismayed at the effects of a secularist ideology on virtually every area of life in the UK.

This was part of the prayer of a godly king called Jehoshaphat when there was the threat of an overwhelming invasion:

“O Lord, the God of our fathers are You not God in the heavens? And are You not ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in Your hand so that no one can stand against You.”

2 Chronicles ch 20 v6(NLT)

It’s a great prayer. You may want to read the rest of that chapter for the fuller picture.

As we pray into the suggested areas below, let’s thank God for those Christians who already work in these places. Let’s pray that God will raise up more Christians, that their jobs will be protected and that despite opposition they will find their voices becoming increasingly heard.

  • Politics
  • Arts (plays, paintings, dance, sculpture, writing etc)
  • Sport
  • Media (internet, TV, radio, newspapers etc)
  • Business
  • Law and the prison service
  • Health and social care
  • Education

There are some wonderful biblical examples of men and women who, despite attempts to crush, discourage and even destroy, experienced the favour of God. The effect of their standing firm meant that their influence was felt at national level. When you have time, you may want to take a look at the lives of Joseph (Genesis ch 37 onwards), Esther (ch1onwards) and Daniel (ch 1-6).
