So what does Jesus’ heart look like in real life?
Martin Dunkley continues our Life in His Name series. He explores John 4:43–54, where Jesus heals the son of a royal official.
Through this passage, we see that no one is beyond God’s care. John highlights this miracle as the second of Jesus’ signs, pointing us to something important about who Jesus is. Although Jesus performed many other miracles, John includes this sign to reveal a key aspect of his heart and authority.
The story shows Jesus’ compassion for someone outside the religious community, a man connected to the Herod family. While many welcomed Jesus because they wanted to see more miracles, this official comes to him out of deep desperation, not for himself but for his son.
Jesus responds with a simple word, bringing healing from a distance. As the man takes Jesus at his word and sets off for home, faith grows. When he learns that his son has been healed, his whole household comes to believe.
This passage invites us to look again at the heart of Jesus, and how he meets people in their greatest need.
