Life In His Name – The Challenge

Mike Beaumont continues our Life in His Name series called The Challenge, as he explores John 5:1–15.

In this passage, Jesus brings his challenge into a place of worship. He challenges how we think about ourselves, especially when being stuck has become familiar. The man looks to the pool for answers rather than to Jesus, and later Jesus challenges him not to return to where he was before.

Jesus also challenges how we think about others. The healing happens on the Sabbath, and the focus quickly shifts to the rule. What was meant to be a gift becomes something to defend. They can see the rule, but not the man.

This passage invites us to pause and consider what we are holding onto, and how we respond when Jesus challenges us.
