Immigrants. So often perceived as a threat. And the Great Pharaoh felt no different. Afraid that the growing numbers of Israelite immigrants would swamp Egypt, he forced them into slavery, believing that its hardships would reduce their numbers. But they simply kept growing. So he instigated a horrific programme of infanticide, ordering the midwives to kill all Israelite baby boys at birth and throw them into the Nile. But the midwives chose not to fear Pharaoh but to be obedient to God, and they protected the baby boys. Still today, the loud and threatening voices of the ‘Pharaohs’ of our culture demand that God’s people obey them and shape their lives to their beliefs and culture. But choosing to fear God and obey him rather than fearing people is key for all those who want to move forward in their Jesus-centred faith.
