In this passage, Jesus explains why he has such authority. It flows from his relationship with the Father. Not from position, power or religion, but from intimacy, trust and shared purpose. Everything Jesus does flows from that relationship.

We glimpse the deep connection between Father and Son. Love, dependence, shared life and shared authority. Jesus also points to the evidence that backs up these claims, through the witness of the Father, John the Baptist, his works, and the Scriptures themselves.

This passage invites us to consider where real freedom is found. Religion that confines, or a relationship that brings life.
