In the next session of our year-long series on the Gospel of John, Life in His Name, Martin Dunkley reflects on John 3 and John the Baptist’s response as people begin to follow Jesus instead.
When John’s disciples become uneasy that more people are going to Jesus, John gently reminds them that his role was never about himself. He is not the Messiah, but the one sent ahead to point to him. Using the picture of a wedding, John explains that real joy comes from seeing the bride with the bridegroom, not from holding on to the spotlight.
The passage calls us to keep Jesus at the centre, not our own roles, recognition or ministries. John is able to step back because he knows who Jesus is. Jesus comes from above, speaks with the authority of the Father, and has been entrusted with everything.
The message is simple and searching. Real life is found only in believing in Jesus and letting him take his rightful place.
