We are thrilled to be welcoming The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham Cathedral, to speak to us this Sunday, 31 May 2026.

So who is Philip?

Philip and his family returned to Durham in 2017 after 16 years in parish ministry in the south of England, where he had originally trained for ministry years earlier.

Philip became Principal of Cranmer Hall, the theological college within St John’s College at Durham University, where he taught New Testament and Christian Leadership. Alongside this, he also served on the General Synod.

In 2023, Philip discerned a call to serve God as Dean of Durham and has spoken about feeling “privileged to serve the mission of this wonderful community.”

As Dean, Philip leads and oversees the overall life and mission of Durham Cathedral. This includes leading worship and preaching, helping shape and communicate the vision of the Cathedral, and chairing the Chapter, its governing body. Philip also serves in a range of governance roles across the city and Diocese.

We look forward to welcoming Philip this Sunday and are excited to hear what God has given him to bring to us.
