In the fifth session of our year-long series on the Gospel of John, Life in His Name, Mike Beaumont explores John 2:1–12 and Jesus’ first sign at the wedding in Cana.
John moves from the big opening of his gospel to an ordinary home, showing that Jesus meets people in everyday places. When the family face the shame of running out of wine, Jesus steps in with compassion and perfect timing.
Mary’s words to the servants, do whatever he tells you, capture the simple obedience that opens the way for God to work. The miracle itself is a sign of something much deeper. The jars used for ritual cleansing are filled and transformed, pointing to the end of the old religion and the beginning of a new relationship with God through Jesus.
This first sign reveals his glory, shows the extravagance of God’s love, and points towards the great banquet still to come for those who put their trust in him.
